Dear Parents and Caregivers,
As part of a refinement of our Behaviour Policy at Tuart Hill, we are introducing some changes to our Good Standing procedures.
From Tuesday 3 June, Good Standing will reset for all students, including those who have already lost strikes this term.
From that date, students will have 2 strikes available rather than 3. In other words, the first strike is a serious warning; the second strike will result in a loss of Good Standing.
The motive behind this change is to raise expectations when it comes to behaviour in school. Our students have now had a significant period in which to become familiar with the concept of Good Standing, and how to go about preserving their Good Standing each term. In fact, In Term 1, we achieved no losses of Good Standing for the first time since it was introduced. We aim to build on this momentum in order to provide the safe and orderly environment required to maximise learning.
To balance this measure, when a student loses their Good Standing, and are put onto a “Behaviour Passport,” they will now only have to demonstrate 5 consecutive days of exemplary behaviour, rather than the current 10 days, in order to return to Good Standing.
For clarification, these changes come into effect from Tuesday, June 3 (after the long weekend). They have been proposed by the Student Engagement Committee and agreed to by the staff of Tuart Hill Primary School, with a view to a more rigorous approach to negative behaviour, while offering students a fairer opportunity to redeem their Good Standing.
In conjunction with these changes, staff continue to explicitly teach desired behaviours in themed blocks over several weeks at a time. The current focus is on personal space and safe movement around school (‘Respect Space, Move with Grace’), and the next will focus on sportsmanship and fairness (‘Humble Winners, Gracious Losers’).
We will explain these changes to students over the coming week, and hope that you will be able to support this transition through discussions at home.
Kindest regards,
Andrew Knight
